Karlin on Self-Determination, Beauty, and the Courage to Choose Yourself
There are women who arrive at thirty. And there are women who begin at thirty. Karlin belongs to the second category — and that is, by far, the more interesting one.
At seventeen, she stood in front of the casting cameras of Germany's Next Top Model, placed sixth in the ninth season, and stepped into an industry that tends to take more from girls that age than it gives. What followed was not the glamorous career trajectory that television formats like to promise. It was something harder and more valuable: real life.
"After the TV show, things actually became even louder," she recalls. Suddenly recognised on the street, at seventeen, without preparation. Overwhelming at first — and then, slowly, an education in what it means to be seen. "To this day I am still recognised on the street — and honestly, it still fills me with enormous gratitude. After all these years, that is anything but a given."
But Karlin would not be Karlin if she had stopped there. In 2021, she founded TRESOR BY KARLIN — a beauty brand that did not emerge from a business idea, but from a concrete, years-long frustration. As a model, she sat in the makeup chair for countless hours. The result was always the same: products that didn't work for her skin tone. Quality that didn't match what she was looking for. At some point, she asked the question that changed everything: "Why wait for someone else to create change when I can create it myself?"
What emerged is more than a cosmetics line. It is a position. "Beauty does not begin with a product — it begins with self-confidence," she says. That is the philosophy at the heart of TRESOR: not to change the face, but to strengthen the person behind it. "Make-up should never work like a mask or make us feel like we need to be someone else. It should underline our personality and make us feel more confident."
In a beauty market that has spent years selling insecurities it manufactured itself, that is a political statement — even if Karlin doesn't frame it that way. She simply lives it. Her daily life looks very little like what appears on Instagram. "Between shoots, I answer emails, work on new ideas, make decisions, solve problems, and am constantly thinking about how to develop my brand further." That is the truth behind the feed. The glamorous and the functional, alternating daily. And she loves both — precisely because they are inseparable.
At thirty, something has shifted that is difficult to express in a single sentence, but Karlin tries anyway. "At 30, nothing feels finished — but finally honest." She knows her strengths. She knows her limits. And she has learned that both matter equally. Earlier, she says, she wanted to prove she could do everything. Today she knows she doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. There were health challenges that disrupted her plans. Moments that required her to reorganise. What might once have read as failure has become part of the story she draws on: "These experiences made me more patient, more aware, and more grateful. They remind me every day to listen to my body while keeping my dreams in sight."
For her, beauty today means freedom. "The freedom to be yourself without constantly having to adapt." At thirty she feels more beautiful than she did at twenty — not because she is more perfect, but because she has stopped searching for perfection.
She celebrated her thirtieth birthday at La Maison in the Golfclub Limburgerhof — surrounded by family and the people closest to her, with décor by Florian Kropp of Haar7 Friseur, hair by Robi Schnitt and makeup by Tameka Givens. Afterward: stillness. Recovery at Villa Medici in Bad Schönborn. A woman who has learned to let moments actually land. The girl with butterflies in her stomach on the way to the GNTM casting still exists. But she no longer needs a judging panel to tell her she is enough.
"I have arrived — not at the end of my journey, but finally at myself." That is the definition of thirty that counts.
